Hui-Li Lee
“Each material needs to be re-considered in its cultural context, to explore its best texture for a particular place. In the U.S., I like working with concrete because of its flexibility of use; in China, I prefer stone, because of its availability and potential for great craftsmanship.”
Hui-Li grew up in Taiwan and came to the U.S. in 1994 for her graduate studies. She joined SWA eighteen years ago. Understanding both Eastern and Western cultures makes her think globally—and act globally, too, on projects ranging from large-scale city parks in China to small roof gardens in Taiwan and Dubai. In the past decade, she has collaborated with many internationally renowned architects (SOM, Artech, and Bing Thom among them), and prides herself on her ability to successfully bring landscape and architecture together as a whole.
